LASEK eye surgery

A question that we are often asked revolves around why some patients at Yorkshire Eye Hospital are recommended to have LASEK surgery instead of LASIK surgery?

LASEK treatment is not an inferior procedure; the effects of LASEK are, in fact, the same as the effects of LASIK treatment. The same expert eye surgeon uses the same laser to perform both procedures. The only difference to you is the healing time. Some people do not have thick enough corneas for a LASIK procedure, so LASEK surgery offers a more suitable option for them.

What do you feel during your LASEK procedure?

With LASEK, all you need to do is lay on a bed while the surgical team does the rest. There is nothing you can do to affect the procedure, and you will feel no pain throughout any step of the LASIK treatment. If you'd like to know more about the procedure, read on.

If, on the other hand, you'd just like to see if you're suitable, call us to book your free consultation on 0845 409 2408.

What happens during a LASEK surgery?

During LASEK surgery the epithelium is removed with a drop of weak alcohol solution, the laser is applied as before, the epithelium is replaced back onto the eye and held in place with a contact lens. The contact lens is then removed a few days later. LASEK is a bladeless operation and there is no pain during the operation - just like LASIK.

What can you expect after LASEK treatment?

There can be some discomfort afterward LASEK surgery, but this is not usually severe and can be managed with post-operative medications. Visual recovery is slower with LASEK than with LASIK. Again, you must adhere to the LASEK aftercare advice given by the clinical team to ensure you have a normal recovery.
