Lens replacement vision correction

As the population ages, many more people will experience a natural deterioration in their sight due to the ageing process which usually starts at around the age of 45. Many no longer want to rely on the inconvenience of spectacles and contact lenses for this purpose and are keen to explore alternatives to enable them to remain glasses free and enjoy their life to the full. Here at Yorkshire Eye Hospital we can help by recommending many new ways of achieving this.

Lens replacement vision correction is an increasingly popular option for spectacle wearers with short and long-sightedness who wish to retain their youthful vision and reduce dependence on specs or contact lenses.

The lens replacement procedure typically takes just 15 minutes and the process itself is similar to cataract surgery as it involves the replacement of the eye's natural lens with a new and permanent lens implant. The new lens gives focused sight, providing the additional focusing power previously provided by spectacles or contact lenses.

With new, technologically advanced lenses, even those with the common condition of astigmatism can be treated. The patient typically undergoes treatment with nothing more than simple anaesthetic eyedrops, which help to ensure the process is comfortable and pain free. This also avoids any fear of needles around the eye.

Vision following treatment

Most patients report a rapid improvement the day after their surgery which continues to improve throughout the healing process. Patients are always keen to outline the differences that the treatment has made to their own lives, often giving them a new lease of life and an opportunity to enjoy everyday activities.

Heather Rosie's story

Heather Rosie, in her mid 40s, suffered from severe short sightedness and astigmatism. Wearing glasses for nearly 40 years, Heather was unable to see further than two inches in front of her nose. Heather's life has now been transformed by a new multifocal lens which has corrected the astigmatism as well as her short-sightedness.

Heather said: "For years I simply could not operate without glasses and I could only wear contact lenses for a maximum four hours before my eyes became very sore. After noticing my sight deteriorating further I decided to have the lens implants."

The lens stays in place permanently and gives focused sight, providing the additional focusing power previously provided by spectacles or contact lenses.
