Surgical Retina and Cataracts

Wai Hong Woon

Mr Woon specialises in retinal, vitreo-retinal and cataract surgery. He gained an honours degree in physics at Churchill College, Cambridge before transferring to study medicine. He qualified in 1981 and subsequently trained at St. Thomas' Hospital to become an ophthalmic surgeon. He became the Pocklington Fellow in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at St. Thomas' Hospital before taking up a consultant post at the Leeds General Infirmary.

In Leeds, his time is split between providing general ophthalmic work and providing a regional tertiary vitreo-retinal service. Patients who need specialist vitreo-retinal surgery are referred to him across the whole of Yorkshire.

He has a special interest in macular hole surgery and has published on this subject. He is currently performing research with Professor Greig at the University of Leeds on the mechanism by which macular hole surgery is effective.

Credentials

Mr Woon has held a substantive post at Leeds General Infirmary since 1995.
Having originally qualified in Experimental Physics, Mr Woon has continued his links by collaborating with the Physics Department at Leeds University on a project on the 'physics of macular hole surgery'.

Published work

Mr Woon has published on: the treatment of retinal detachments; the treatment of dislocated lens fragments; the optics of laser treatment of the retina and on the pathogenesis of macular holes.
