NEW LENS PROVES A REAL EYE OPENER FOR YORKSHIRE’S DAVID

David Diston is a 50 year old joiner from Baildon, Yorkshire who, after being longsighted with an astigmatism, has had a groundbreaking lens implanted in his eye to treat both conditions at once.

David is one of the very first people in the country to have the new concept AcriLISA Toric lens fitted, which he had done at Yorkshire Eye Hospital by consultant ophthalmologist, Oliver Backhouse.  He is thrilled with the results and the refraction is now ‘spot on’ - all his longsight and astigmatism have completely gone.  After years of wearing heavy bi-focals, David is now truly free from his glasses.  In fact - the only glasses he needs now are the safety specs he has to wear while working at his construction business!

As a very keen scuba diver and active member of the Bradford Sub Aqua Club, David became increasingly frustrated with not being able to see underwater. After unsuccessfully trying to persevere with contact lenses, he elected for lens surgery with the pioneering, new AcriLISA Toric lens, which, uniquely, is multifocal and corrects astigmatism at the same time. For the last 15 years, David has been forced to give up his scubadiving hobby and couldn’t even snorkel due to his lack of sight as this meant that even returning to the shore became difficult!

He can now see well into the distance, can read unaided and has already planned a family diving holiday to the Red Sea to celebrate his new found sight.   He said: “I have gone from not even being able to see the large numbers on my bedside clock to being able to see everything bright and clear, without glasses.  I am particularly looking forward to resuming my hobby of scubadiving and am relishing the opportunity to have a glasses free holiday with my family!”

David has his own construction business in Farsley which he has had for the last 26 years and he is now looking forward to a working life without specs. He is now also relishing the opportunity to go on spec free holidays with his wife, Andrea who is a lecturer for Bradford University.

Further details on the AcriLISA Toric lens

The AcriLISAToric lens is unique. It is the ONLY lens that gives 'multifocal' vision (from near to far) AND corrects any level of astigmatism. The lens is suitable for patients undergoing a cataract procedure who wish to be free of spectacles most of the time.

The majority of multifocal lenses in the market place are unsuitable for patients who have astigmatism. The AcriLISAToric however is designed so that astigmatism is corrected via the front surface of the lens with the mulifocal surface on the back. This provides an optimal solution for those with astigmatism

This type of surgery has significant advantages over other types of refractive surgery including laser.

  • Removal of your natural lens means you will not develop cataracts as you get older

  • Full peripheral (side to side) vision

  • Permanent solution to a focusing problem

  • No age limit

  • Use in short-sighted and long-sighted eyes

  • Offers good near and far vision in differing lighting conditions independent of the pupil size as well as reduced glare/halos

  • Unlike traditional ‘fixed focus’ artificial lens you don’t need glasses to change your distance of object viewing.

  • This bifocal lens is designed to produce good distance and near vision.

  • Unlike the Accommodating lenses available the AcriLISA bifocal lens has near and far focus built into the lens design rather than relying on the slightly unpredictable movement of an accommodating lens to produce near vision.

  • You are likely to enjoy useful near and far vision again without glasses or contact lenses.
