Roz looks into the future with mini telescope implant
57 year old Roz Jowett from Halifax is one of the first patients in the UK to have a groundbreaking new eye treatment which involves a miniature telescope being implanted in the eye.
Just two days after her first operation she was seeing very nearly well enough to classify as normal! This was well ahead of the normal driving standard. Previously, her condition meant she could not even recognise faces in a room. Roz suffers from a form of macular degeneration - the most common cause of sight loss in the over 50s and prior to her treatment, she was losing her sight. She has now had lens implants, called IOL VIP (intra-ocular lens for visually impaired patients) with astounding results.
The
Yorkshire
Eye
Hospital is one of the first hospitals in
UK to offer this pioneering lens implant treatment which involves the surgical implantation of a pair of lenses that divert the image away from the damaged macular and onto a healthy part of the retina using the principals of the Galilean telescope. Consultant ophthalmologist Shafiq Rehman is delighted at Roz’s results. He said: “Roz’s results are absolutely outstanding which is very gratifying. Many more could benefit from this groundbreaking procedure.”
The IOL VIP treatment is also a potential lifeline for the thousands who suffer from macular degeneration. The treatment gives hope to sufferers for whom, up until now, there has been no effective treatment. Roz lives with her husband in Hipperholme in
Halifax and runs her own janitorial company from home so her improved sight will assist with the overall business running.
"Their expertise put me completely at ease. That's just what you'd expect from Yorkshire's only dedicated eye hospital."
