Botox
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is a bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that make muscles contract.
Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often lead to the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet.
By injecting Botox into the muscle responsible for creating the wrinkle it can give the face a more relaxed and smoother appearance and sometimes the lines can disappear completely.
Is it safe?
Botox has been safely used for strabismus (squint) and Blepharospasm (eyelid spasm) since the early eighties.
Like many medical breakthroughs, the cosmetic effects of Botulinum Toxin were discovered by coincidence by Jean Carruthers, a Canadian ophthalmologist, who noticed that her patients being treated for eyelid spasm were delighted that their frown lines had disappeared too.
Jean and Alistair Carruthers (a Consultant Dermatologist) went on to trial patients with hyperfunctional facial lines.
The remarkable improvement of frown lines seen after only one injection quickly led to widespread acceptance of the technique.
The minute amounts of Botulinum Toxin given in cosmetic use make it a safe and effective procedure.
How long does it last?
The initial effects of the treatment become visible within 2-5 days.
The maximum effect is reached in about 1-2 weeks.
Your facial expression will be more relaxed but by no means mask-like.
The overall result is very natural.
The effect of the treatment generally lasts between 3 and 6 months.
Is it painful?
Botox is a very easily tolerated treatment and if requested an anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand, although the majority of patients do not feel the need for it.
The treatment takes minutes without marking the skin significantly.
What areas can be treated?
Common areas for treatment are Crows Feet, Frown Lines and Forehead Lines.
Cost = £275 for 1 area and £50 each for additional areas.
