Accommodating Intraocular Lens (IOL)

As they get older many people are faced with either using reading glasses or varifocal/ bifocal spectacles.

Developments in surgery and intraocular lens design have seen the production of intraocular lenses (Accommodating IOL) which are able to respond to the fine movements of the muscles that control the focus of the eye. The lenses move backwards and forwards in the eye in such a way to permit clear vision over a range of distances, from near to far. In other words these IOL's can be used to restore some of the power of focusing on near objects lost with the onset of middle age. Their efficacy varies from patient to patient.

In this type of surgery your lens is removed and is replaced by an Accommodating IOL.

Your surgeon will discuss which type of lens is more suitable for you.
