Laser eye surgeons at Yorkshire Eye Hospital

Most people assume that all LASEK and LASIK laser eye surgeons are equal in their qualifications. That isn't necessarily so. A closer inspection at some of the less expensive options in laser eye surgery will reveal that most surgeons practicing laser eye surgery in the UK are not NHS consultants, and some are not fellows of the Royal College of Ophthalmology.

A consultant is the title of a senior doctor who has completed all of his or her specialist training and been placed on the specialist register in their chosen specialty.

A doctor must be on the Specialist Register before he or she may be employed as a substantive consultant in the National Health Service. This usually entails holding a Certificate of Completion of Training in any of the recognised specialties (i.e. ophthalmology).

Meet our laser eye surgeons

Each of our practicing laser eye surgery doctors are NHS consultants.

Shafiq Rehman, MBChB, FRCOphth

Laser eye surgeon Mr. Rehman has been a consultant at Yorkshire Eye Hospital since February 2003 and is very pleased that the state of the art equipment at the hospital can be used to diagnose and treat the vast majority of ophthalmic conditions. "The ambience of the premises and the wonderfully helpful support staff combine to make the Yorkshire Eye Hospital a unique organisation."

Mr Rehman has worked as a consultant ophthalmologist in Calderdale and Huddersfield since 2002. He has held a substantive post at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust since 2002.

To date, Mr Rehman has contributed to 14 publications and posters and has given 17 presentations to learned societies. In his spare time this laser eye surgeon enjoys hill walking, entertaining, playing squash and swimming.

Jacobus Pauw MBChB, DASA, MMed (ophth), FCS (SA) ophth.

Mr. Pauw relocated from South Africa to England in 2001 and has been a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust since 2001. He has special interest in laser refractive surgery, high volume cataract surgery, and paediatric ophthalmology. In 2001 he became a consultant to the Boots Laser Eye Clinics and worked with them until 2004.

He is a member of the British Medical Association, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UKISCRS and ESCRS. He has produced a number of publications and presentations at congresses.

Our LASEK and LASIK eye surgeons are highly experienced and more than well equipped to take the best care of your eyesight. If you should have any questions about our team, the conditions or treatments we offer, please don't hesitate to contact us.
