Qualified eye optometrists

At Yorkshire Eye Hospital, your screening tests will be performed only by qualified UK Optometrists, from start to finish.

At most clinics, staff performing screening tests for laser eye surgery, are not clinically qualified. Only clinically trained optometrists perform screening tests at Yorkshire Eye Hospital.

Optometrists complete a three-year undergraduate honours degree followed by a one-year 'pre-registration period' where they complete supervised practice under the supervision of an experienced qualified practitioner. Some optometrists pursue further academic qualifications (i.e. Master's degrees) and carry out research above and beyond their clinical duties.

Meet our UK optometrists

Yorkshire Eye Hospital is proud to employ two eye optometrists that are at the peak of their profession.

Charlotte Hazel, OD (Melbourne) PhD (Bradford)

Charlotte grew up in Australia and obtained both a Bachelor and Masters in Optometry from Melbourne University. In 1997 she moved to the UK to study for a PhD at Aston University.
Following the completion of her PhD she moved to Bradford University where she worked initially as a research fellow and clinical teacher and then as a lecturer in optometry.

Here Charlotte carried out research into the development of myopia (short-sight) and aberrations of the eye. Her research interests have since led her to the area of laser refractive eye surgery, and she has been advising patients at both initial consultations and laser surgery aftercare for the past eight years.

As well as her work at Yorkshire Eye Hospital, she also works part-time for the NHS as a UK optometrist specialist where she works in clinics assessing patients with age-related macular degeneration and following cataract surgery.

Lesley Bullivant, BSc Hons

Lesley graduated with BSc Hons in Optometry from City University, London in 1975.
Following nine years in private practice in London, Lesley took up a post as a research officer and clinical instructor at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia.
She returned to the UK in 1987 and following the birth of her daughter came to live in Leeds where she managed a large city centre UK optometry practice for twelve years.

Looking for a new challenge, Lesley became involved in laser refractive surgery in 2001 and joined the team at Yorkshire Eye Hospital in 2006 providing pre-operative assessment and post-operative care for refractive surgery patients.
